Everyone needs to eat every day for survival - the majority of what you eat on a properly balanced diet all goes towards keeping your body's basic functions running, measured as your basal metabolic rate. To maintain a steady weight, you need to consume a little more on top of this to cover the exercise you do in a day. However, if your goals are to lose or gain weight (lean muscle weight rather than fat of course!), then your energy requirement (calories) will be either less or more than this amount.

There are many misconceptions about the quantity and types of foods that make up a healthy eating style though. Most people trying to lose weight on a 'diet' actually under-eat, and so although they lose weight at first, they are actually lowering their metabolic rate in the process. This in turn brings the weight loss to a stop and they hit a plateau. The typical reaction to this is to further decrease the calories, but this puts your body into starvation mode, losing lean tissue and increasing body fat. This produces what I call the 'skinny-fat' look, all too popular with today's female celebrities - thin, but with cellulite and no muscle tone!
